What is a MOCAL?

Every UW clinical department that is represented by an ABMS board in the MOC Portfolio Program (see “Participating ABMS Boards” tab for a current list) has identified at least one physician from the department to serve as an MOC Advisor and Liaison, or MOCAL. These MOCALs have been chosen based on their dedication, experience and/or interest in Quality Improvement (QI) within medical practice.

What is the role of a MOCAL?

Department MOCALs will have two main roles.
  1. Serve on the MOCAL Committee. This is a minimum two year term and involves establishing the structure of the MOC Portfolio Program by endorsing and supporting policies and procedures of the MOC Portfolio Program, providing expertise to departmental MOC projects as needed, maintaining an understanding of their boards’ MOC requirements (especially Part IV), resolving physician disputes with regard to meaningful participation and advising MOC Portfolio Program staff.

  2.

  3. Contribute to the overall Quality Improvement (QI) and MOC efforts within their departments by way of the MOC Portfolio Program. MOCALs act as the clinical resource to department physicians who submit MOC Portfolio project applications. In addition, MOCALs help identify specific practice gaps within the department or a specific physicians’ practice in order to facilitate the creation of department/physician level QI for MOC projects.
